Do the wrinkles always form in the same way “I thought,I have no idea!” recalls the biomedical engineer Guy German from Binghamton University in New York. German and his colleague Rachel Laytin hired three volunteers to soak their fingers for 30 minutes.
Images confirm the pattern decorating the participants’ wet fingertips mostly repeated themselves when they were soaked again 24 hours later. As water steals into our skin through open sweat, it eventually decreases the concentration of salt in our outer layer. Nerve(神经)fibers remind the brain of this change in skin condition, which then activates our bodies'automatic blood vessel(血管) withdrawal. When these tiny skin vessels change, they cause once-smooth fingers and toes to become rougher.
“Blood vessels don't change their position much—— they move around a bit, but in relation to other blood vessels, they' re pretty stable, " explains German. “That means the wrinkles should form in the same manner, and we proved that they do.”
This wrinkling isn't just a random side-effect either. The physical changes create a measurable advantage in wet conditions: the skin's temporary rougher surface provides a better grip(抓握力), making it easier for us to walk on or grasp wet things. As these wrinkles give us super grip it seems strange we don't keep them full time. While researchers don't know why this is, they suspect the temporary roughness might reduce our fingers' sensitivity or make them easier to injure.
It was originally assumed that swelling caused soaked skin to wrinkle in the past, but a study in 2016 revealed our skin would need to swell at least 20 percent for that to happen. What's more, previous research found people with nerve damage don't experience finger wrinkling, leading to further investigation of the processes involved. “We' ve heard that wrinkles don't form in people who have median nerve damage in their fingers, " says German. “One of my students told us,‘I' ve got median nerve damage in my fingers.’ So we tested him—— no wrinkles!”
In addition to satisfying childlike curiosity, understanding this wrinkling of finger skin could help confirm identity after extended water exposure following natural disasters.
32. What does the underlined word“soak” in Paragraph 1 mean
